As a gym...wow!
Our goal as a program was simply to give our teams an opportunity to see cheer through a new experience. We wanted confident routines on stage and to see how our kids could handle this intense pressure.
Never was winning a goal. While I know competitive coaches and athletes always have that in mind focusing on an end result isn’t a good approach to competition. I have said for years - always make your goal what YOU can control. You cannot control a score, you cannot control other teams, you cannot control placements BUT you CAN control your effort, your attitude, your strength, your responsibilities. When you can stay focused on YOUR goal your dreams can come true.
Our squads killed it this weekend. EnVogue winning NCA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS and FOB placing 5th. Both of these teams represented Rockstar Cheer Atlanta, their coaches, Donald, Katie, and Avery, their choreographer, Lewis Isaih McClendon, the Rockstar Brand, and all of our other squads cheering for us at home with the heart and effort.
To say these accomplishments are great is an understatement. These accomplishments are HUGE. To me, these accomplishments are as big as NCA itself. To say I am blown away at our staff is also an understatement.
Under Donald’s leadership he has a vision and he isn’t shy or scared to make me take the steps to get us where he knows we can be. I never ever could have imagined our little pink and black program could have held their own in a D1 division on the worlds largest stage ...but he did! He demands, he pushes, he challenges, and he’s basically a brat, but he is also right! He knows talent and hard work when he sees it and we definitely have both.
As coaches, Katie and Avery- you both leave me speechless.
Katie-- we can laugh about your Tsunami days - the endless meetings and talks but what impresses me the most is you didn’t quit. You never gave up - you didn’t think I was crazy with my philosophy on coaching and working with kids. You took what I said and made it your own. You did the work - and yes, it is worth it. Yes, I am proud of you for the win but I am more proud of HOW you lead and win...humble, head down, and focused.
Avery - your growth is amazing. Your passion to follow your academic dreams AND give everything to these kids is a testament to how you live your life. You stepped in beside Donald and went from an assistant to basically co-head coach. You lead this team with focus and determination. Where FOB started and where they are today is because you and Donald have found a way to not only mentor teamwork to your squad but also push one another to do the work. I love hearing you walk down the streets of Dallas and spout out your plans for practices this week. THAT is great coaching.
And, Lewis, your choreo vision blows me away. Your ability to make a routine as unique as the coaches and athletes standing in front of you is a true gift. Your passion and expectation for not only yourself, but for the kids and the coaches is exactly what we need and want. I am humbled by you and I hope you always know and understand we value your opinions so very much.
And, lastly, the families and parents in our program—-we demand a lot, we have had more than our fair share of issues outside of our control this year, but your support makes it all possible. The phrase “TRUST & BELIEVE” has been the motto and focus all year. When you can truly trust AND believe you allow your coaches to carefully push your kids where they never imagined possible. It is only through TRUST that coaches are effective.
And, I have to thank,Glenn, for supporting, loving, and living this dream right beside me. Not sure many men could hang in there for 25+years but you do and your unconditional support makes it all happen!
I am leaving Dallas happy and wanting more!! It is a blessing to be a competitive person.
